The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which took off in 2021, is more than a trade agreement—it’s a beacon of hope. It’s Africa’s chance to break free from the chains of poverty and underdevelopment that have long hindered its progress.
The AfCFTA is poised to redefine the continent’s destiny, promising to increase Africa’s income by $450 billion by 2035. Analysts say it presents a major opportunity for African countries to bring 30 million people out of extreme poverty and to raise the incomes of 68 million others who live on less than $5.50 per day.
Africa must seize the moment and embrace free trade as a catalyst for resilience and development. By dismantling trade barriers, harmonizing regulations, and fostering intra-African trade, we can unleash the continent’s untapped economic potential and lift millions out of poverty. Free trade fosters competition, stimulates innovation, and attracts investment, laying the foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity.
For example, the implementation of AfCFTA could facilitate trade measures that cut red tape and simplify customs procedures that would drive $292 billion of the $450 billion in potential income gains.
Infact, the major beneficiaries of the implementation of AfCFTA are the small and medium-sized enterprises owners (SMEs) and marginalized communities. It will not only give them an opportunity to participate in the formal economy, but upscale their businesses in an unprecedented way.
However, to enjoy all these benefits, countries must be committed to comply with the values of economic freedom. For instance, free trade isn’t just about abstract economics, it’s about creating a level playing field where every entrepreneur, no matter how small, can compete. It’s about ensuring that the fruits of growth are shared by all, not just a privileged few.
The AfCFTA represents a historic opportunity to foster integration, boost intra-African trade, and enhance the continent’s competitiveness in the global marketplace. However, realizing this vision requires bold leadership, decisive action, and a commitment to inclusive growth.
